If a debt is sold to a creditor, do you still have the option of paying the back directly?

If I have a credit card debt through BoA that has been sold to a third party collections agency, do I have to pay them? The research I did on the collections agency seemed a little sketchy and I'd rather pay BoA directly. Must I go through the third party agency once it has been sold?
