A newspaper published an image that I took. Can I request payment?

I am a professional photographer and took some portraits of some friends for the use on their work website. A local paper has printed the images that I took. I have not been given any credit or payment. Am I within my rights to demand a payment and how much is a reasonable amount for each image used in their publication? Thanks
